Disputed United States-funded GHF Aid Organization Terminates Aid Operations

The debated, American and Israeli-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) says it is winding down its aid operations in the Gaza region, following nearly half a year.

The foundation had already suspended its three food distribution sites in Gaza after the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was implemented in recent weeks.

The foundation sought to avoid UN systems as the primary provider of relief to Palestinian residents.

United Nations organizations and other humanitarian groups refused to co-operate with its approach, saying it was unethical and unsafe.

Many residents were fatally wounded while seeking food amid turbulent circumstances near the foundation's locations, mostly by Israeli fire, based on UN documentation.

Israel said its forces fired warning shots.

Mission Completion

The organization declared on Monday that it was concluding activities now because of the "effective conclusion of its crisis response", with a total of three million packages containing the corresponding to over 187 million food portions distributed to Gazans.

The foundation's chief officer, Jon Acree, also said the US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) - which has been created to help carry out the United States' Palestinian peace proposal - would be "implementing and enlarging the approach the organization demonstrated".

"The foundation's approach, in which militant groups were prevented from misappropriating relief supplies, had major impact in getting Hamas to the table and securing a halt in hostilities."

Reactions and Responses

The Palestinian faction - which refutes aid diversion claims - approved the termination of the aid organization, based on information.

A spokesman for declared the foundation should be subject to scrutiny for the negative impact it created to local residents.

"We call upon all global human rights groups to ensure that it does not escape accountability after leading to casualties and wounds of thousands of Gazans and concealing the starvation policy implemented by the Israeli government."

Foundation History

The organization commenced activities in Gaza on late May, a short period subsequent to Israel had partially eased a comprehensive closure on humanitarian and trade shipments to Gaza that lasted 11 weeks and caused severe shortages of essential supplies.

Three months later, a nutritional emergency was proclaimed in the Gaza metropolitan area.

The GHF's food distribution sites in southern and central Gaza were managed by US private security contractors and situated within areas controlled by Israeli forces.

Humanitarian Concerns

International organizations and their affiliates said the system breached the basic relief guidelines of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that guiding distressed residents into militarised zones was inherently unsafe.

The UN's human rights office said it recorded the killing of at least 859 Palestinians seeking food in the vicinity of GHF sites between late May through end of July.

A further 514 persons were killed near the courses followed by international humanitarian deliveries, it also mentioned.

The greater part of these people were killed by the Israeli military, as per the organization's documentation.

Contrasting Reports

Israel's armed services said its soldiers had released alerting fire at persons who advanced toward them in a "menacing" way.

The organization declared there were no shootings at the aid sites and alleged that United Nations of using "inaccurate and deceptive" data from the Palestinian health authority administered by Hamas.

Subsequent Developments

The foundation's prospects had been unclear since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a ceasefire deal to implement the first phase of Trump's peace plan.

The agreement stated humanitarian assistance would take place "absent meddling from the two parties through the international bodies and their affiliates, and the Red Crescent, in combination with other global organizations not linked whatsoever" with Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities.

International organization official Stephane Dujarric declared this week that the foundation's closure would have "no influence" on its operations "because we never worked with them".

The spokesperson additionally stated that while more aid was getting into Gaza since the truce was implemented on October 10th, it was "not enough to meet all the needs" of the 2.1 million residents.
