For the Checkout Assistant Who Left Me Totally Without Words – I Salute You

The scene was a day of rest, and I found myself grumpy enough, refueling my mum’s car. This was a typical gas station that operates as a convenience store, which often leads of waiting behind shoppers with carts of slightly overpriced groceries. It's an awful situation to unfold when all you want is to get gasoline and leave. Dreadful.

Fourth in line I stood among those waiting. There was only person serving, a young woman. A peculiar quality about her. When the faffer at the first position had finally paid for a cleaning product, a baked snack, and his box of eggs, I was certain that I heard the cashier wish him a wonderful day. Unusual. Perhaps I’d misheard, or maybe she did say it and was being sarcastic. The thought crossed my mind if she might actually be a comrade in my fight against faff, sharing my contempt for individuals slowing down simple fuel-buyers such as myself.

Advancing next, now third in line. The new leader of our line completed her gasoline purchase with commendable speed. Again, the phrase came: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” No, actually, it was “have a wonderful day”. Someone from the US? Here in Stourbridge? The pronunciation indicated it, and few locals wishes anyone those exact words, or simply a good day. Very rare. It's uncommon to find US citizens visiting this town, least of all working in petrol stations or anywhere else.

Second in line at last. After an elderly lady dealing with a right old battle with her carryall, her groceries, her handbag and her membership pass. This took an eternity. When she was done, the woman also got told an excellent day. Definitely from the US. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark at the cashier, to observe that reaction as they gaze at you, unsmilingly, and say with absolute sincerity: “That is quite humorous.” Yet no idea came of anything hilarious to express.

Ultimately, I accepted for the absolute sincerity – or a mimicry of sincerity, essentially the same as identical in effect – while she stared directly into my eyes, to my very core, and bid me a wonderful day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
