Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial sum.
The response to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
âWhat a disgusting and despicable statement,â remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Some Republican elected officials also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.
Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his party to defend the comments.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, thereâs a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of a different individual.
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
