New York City Mayor Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent development, Adams reversed course, revealing he now plans to appear with the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.

“It is crucial to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how critical this race is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention internationally and symbolized aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democratic party.

In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
