New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police issued security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
