An extensive industrial complex situated in the suburbs of Jakarta is dealing with radioactive pollution after a government team detected presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at 22 production plants inside the area, that includes businesses that export chilled marine products.
The finding has triggered immediate decontamination efforts and the relocation of nearby residents, following a similar pollution alert in the United States that was traced back to the Jakarta plants.
A major international store chain is among the companies that have withdrawn items from their stores following the discovery.
Indonesian officials initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of chilled breaded prawns sent by an Indonesian firm.
The FDA issued an warning instructing suppliers and retailers to discard the goods and not sell it, although the found amount was well under the authority's action threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not pose an acute hazard to consumers.
The authority explained: “The main health effect of worry following longer term, repeated small amount exposure (eg through consumption of contaminated products or liquid over time) is an elevated risk of cancer, resulting from harm to DNA within body cells.”
Radioactivity scans revealed at least twenty-two plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The official taskforce did not name the twenty-one other manufacturing facilities, but confirmed they would promptly undergo cleanup processes conducted by Indonesia's nuclear authority.
A senior official declared that people living in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was decontaminated, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.
Medical officials also conducted examinations on local employees and people located near the industrial estate, identifying 9 individuals who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to go back.
The contaminated sites will right away undergo decontamination operations by Indonesia's atomic energy institute. Officials have further designated the area of a scrap metal factory as an isolation facility for polluted goods.
Indonesia, which has no atomic power plants or weapons program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from abroad.
An official spokesperson told the media that scrap metal imports were the probable source of pollution and announced the government would immediately enforce restrictions on scrap metal arrivals. He said that transport were also being inspected for possible contamination as they traveled through the area.
Caesium-137 is a hazardous radioactive element that usually enters the ecosystem as a result of nuclear experiments or accidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chornobyl. Small amounts are present in earth, products and the atmosphere.
The amount found in the frozen prawns was much less than FDA intervention levels, but the agency stated prolonged contact to including low doses of caesium was linked to an elevated risk of the disease.
The recalled seafood was sold at major store outlets across at least a 12 US states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
