The England midfielder Must Drop the Nonsense to Earn a Key Role With Tuchel.

For Bellingham to hopes to force his way once again into England’s best team, it would be smart to cut out the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted upon realizing that he was going up following a night of mixed performance in Tirana was unacceptable.

"I don’t want to overstate it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect for the squad members who substitute on," stated Tuchel. "Choices are taken and you have to accept it when you're on the field."

There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for an outburst. Kane had recently scored to make the national team leading by two in a dead rubber fixture, the game had six minutes to go and Bellingham, who had not played particularly well, was just shown a yellow for a foul on Armando Broja. This was hardly a questionable change. In fact it might have been reckless for the head coach to leave Bellingham on considering it was possible he would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the World Cup by getting a second caution.

Drawing Attention Upon Himself

Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. There was no disguising the 22-year-old’s disappointment when he clocked that his replacement was ready for another player. His arms went up in exasperation and although he exchanged a handshake after making his way to the sideline it was clear that the manager did not appreciate it.

This is the challenge facing Bellingham. He praised his teammate for sending in the ball for the captain to head in his second of the night, but everything else was self-defeating. It's not like complaining was going to reverse the substitution. The coach has repeatedly emphasized respecting team hierarchies and the value of showing proper conduct.

Facing Examination

The midfielder, left out of last month’s squad, is being watched carefully upon his return to the squad recently. In effect he was being assessed and he has not done himself any favours with his response to his substitution as England rounded off a perfect qualifying campaign by defeating a tough opposition from their opponents.

The System and the Setup

As a result opinions are divided on if the squad perform optimally when Bellingham plays. What we saw was inconclusive. There was experimentation from Tuchel early on. He has given England a clear system in recent months, building with a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different versus Albania. The young defender was made his England debut, Adam Wharton made his first start at this level and the use of the defender as a part-time midfielder gave a faint echo to the Manchester club's 2023 treble winners.

A Game of Two Halves

Bellingham was a mixed bag. He created an opportunity for his teammate in the latter period but often looked trying too hard. There were a lot of poorly executed passes. A pointless clash with a rival player early on. England's play was messy after halftime. A scoring chance for the opponents resulted from Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking came after he was dispossessed to Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.

Depth Makes the Difference

In the end the squad's strength was decisive. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who looked better suited to the role occupied by Bellingham during the first half, and Bukayo Saka. Later Saka whipped in a set-piece for Harry Kane to score the first goal. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will be crucial at the World Cup.

Relationship Not Broken

However, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of Rashford's cross for the second goal was a little lost amid the drama of the Rogers substitution. When the match concluded, everyone was watching Bellingham. Tuchel came over to his side and guided the Real Madrid midfielder towards the travelling England fans. Their relationship is not broken. Tuchel is not willing to discard Bellingham yet. Yet whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him the central position is still uncertain.
