Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its contentious sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in the coming June.
This deal, reportedly valued at around ÂŁ10 million annually, was initiated six years ago and has since come under fire.
This criticism is due to Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in persistent fighting in the eastern areas of the adjacent DRC.
Earlier this year, Arsenal was accused of issuing a severe rebuff to the authorities in Congo by not arranging a meeting with the DRC's foreign minister to talk about the deal.
Visit Rwanda operates as a division of the the country's development agency, which is a public entity.
Many speculate that Arsenal committed to and continued this partnership chiefly to increase their fanbase in Africa.
However, the deal has now ended after both parties “jointly decided” to part ways.
“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have outperformed the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and responsible tourism, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” declared an club announcement.
The release further noted that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's goal of becoming an international sporting hub in Africa and stage additional international competitions while implementing grassroots football initiatives that have assisted numerous youth athletes and coaches develop their skills and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, characterized the deal as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “advancing” the club's goals.
Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Gunners Supporting Peace staging protests outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in April's conclusion.
Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to hide the partnership emblem on jerseys.
Around that time, the French champions extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has caused the branding featured on the Spanish club's first-team and women's team jerseys.
