The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by American Private Equity Firm.

An iconic tropical holiday destination located within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

The Reported Acquisition Agreement

The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.

The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant array of facilities:

• Five separate hotels
• More than 20 dining and drinking venues
• 20 retail outlets
• An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A boat marina and a commercial airport

The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.

A Look Back at Ownership

The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.

Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
