Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
