Three Lions Coach Shares His Approach: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

Ten years back, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Now, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His path from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. He recalls, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his calling.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement has been remarkable. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs included elite sides, plus he took on international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a systematic approach so we can for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language such as "break".

“It's not time off or a rest,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

Barry describes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We aim to control each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and we dedicate many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead of changes but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured a spot in the tournament with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“We are both certain that the style of play must reflect all the positives of English football,” he comments. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It should feel like a cape instead of heavy armour.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a system that lets them to move and run like they do every week, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared these days. They can organize – structured defenses. Our aim is to speed up play through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

His desire for improvement is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he felt anxious about the presentation, especially as his class included stars like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out the most challenging environments he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced in Germany, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
